Its headquarter is located in Corning, New York. In 168 years of history, Corning invented many lifestyle-changing products. For example, Corning made the first light bulb when the light bulb was invented in 1879. In the 1980s, Corning brought black and white to color to China. Developed the first fiber and so on. Corning's business is divided into five major segments. The first is display technology. Corning is the world's leading manufacturer of glass substrates. The second optical communication, Corning is an optical fiber manufacturer. The third is environmental technology. The fourth block is life sciences, and Corning is the world's largest supplier of cell-based genetic analysis. The fifth is special materials. All the glass windows of the US Space Shuttle and the world's largest astronomical telescope lens are made by Corning. This also includes Gorilla Glass for everyone's smart phones.
Li Fang said that Corning's success is due to the three-four-five strategy, three are three core technologies: glass technology, ceramic technology, optical physics, and four Corning's four manufacturing and process platforms: melting process, precision forming, extrusion Ceramic carrier, vapor deposition. The display industry has grown from nothing to something, and it has happened in the past 20 years. In the 1990s, there was almost no display industry, and now the glass is calculated in square feet, which is a very, very fast growing industry. The industry agrees that this market will continue to grow from 2018 to 2022. Although the current growth of PCs and smartphones is not very fast, and smartphones are still growing negatively this year, this does not affect future expectations. We believe that there are three major factors driving market growth: the first is large-sized TVs, and the compound annual growth rate of TVs over 65 inches in these five years is 20%. The second is outdoor displays. Outdoor displays such as airports, high-speed rail stations, and large shopping malls have great demand growth. The third is the on-board display. Driven by these three needs, the 5-year growth rate from 2018 to 2022 is a 5% -6% growth rate. But this year the whole industry has had a hard time, especially in the panel industry. There are two reasons for this situation. The first is that the production capacity of the display industry's multiple production lines, including the 8.6 and 10.5 generation lines, was released at this time. The second is that the environment is not good, and the overall economic situation is not good, reducing the demand for displays. In this case, Samsung and LG have announced that they have closed their TFT factories, and Taiwan, China has also closed their TFT factories.
Li Fang said that after 2021, the market is expected to recover to a period of healthy growth, and the future market development is full of confidence. As a glass substrate manufacturer, Corning believes that there are five major trends in the display market in the future. The first is a large display. Regardless of televisions, mobile phones, PADs, including current monitors, consumers like the larger the better. Large-size TVs have a good growing demand. Since BOE newly built the world's first 10.5 generation line in Hefei, it has led the trend of large-size TVs, and Corning is the first company in the world to make 10.5-generation substrates. The second high-resolution display, the higher the resolution the better. Now 4K can no longer meet consumer demand, consumers are beginning to pursue 8K, and smart phones are also required to be above 500M. The third is fashion. Consumers like thin, light-profile designs with stylish displays, narrow bezels and even borderless displays. Taking the thickness as an example, the thickness of a conventional TV is 10 to 15 millimeters, and now it is 5 millimeters. Corning's Iris glass replaces the PMA of traditional TVs. Its thickness has been reduced by 50% and brightness has been increased by 20%. This glass production line is now also located in Hefei. The fourth is toughness. Consumers particularly want to show that they can be stronger and more resistant to falls. Corning's Gorilla Glass has been used on the cover glass of more than 6 billion mobile phones worldwide in the past 12 years. Last year, Corning introduced the sixth-generation Gorilla Glass, which fell from the height of 1 meter to the ground 15 times. Broken, Corning will launch the seventh generation of Gorilla Glass next year, which is more resistant to drop than the sixth generation. The fifth is to display everywhere. There are four key points from the glass perspective of a car's built-in on-board display: The first is to bring touch. The second is to be safe. In the event of a car accident, the safety of the driver and passengers must be guaranteed. The third is to prevent glare and reflection. The fourth is innovation, to be 3D, to be fashionable.
