Peng Xuhui said that with 5G, AI, and blockchain technology leading the transformation of information interaction, the display industry is facing new needs and new challenges in seven fields including mobile terminals, automobiles, smart homes, medical care, industry, and smart cities.
The first is mobile smart terminals. Mobile smart terminal displays, represented by smartphones, account for nearly 70% of Tianma's business. The advent of 5G will have the greatest impact on smartphones, which will bring more demand for replacements, and will greatly improve the occupation of production capacity and the profitability of the entire industry.
How will 5G change the screen display requirements of mobile terminals such as mobile phones? First of all, 5G will greatly increase the network transmission rate. In the future, the amount of mobile communication information transmission will increase, and the demand for human-computer interaction will also increase. A larger area display solution is required. To increase the effective display area, flexible screens and folding screens are needed. In addition to single folds, Tianma will also introduce conical folds and stretchable displays. The second is low power consumption. The screen is the big head of power consumption in smart phones. The future development of display technology will focus on how to reduce power consumption. The third is to reduce the thickness and achieve a smaller bending radius, which is an important explicit requirement for the thinning of the screen.
The second is the automotive field. Cars have become the third space for human beings. In addition to the functions of future cars, there is also a very important function-the information interaction platform. Significant changes will occur in the number, area, and quality of display screens and the characteristics of interaction in future cars. The car is not only functional, but also has aesthetic value. The display screen must match the interior of the entire car and meet the human aesthetics. Therefore, more flexible screens and even transparent screens will be applied to automotive displays, and there will be more demand for OLED and MicroLED. Peng Xuhui believes that many characteristics of MicroLED are very suitable for the needs of in-vehicle displays. Tianma will continue to increase MicroLED investment in the automotive field.
At present, there are also many demands for display screens around the car. For example, the charging pile of electric vehicles and new energy vehicles is an emerging terminal for human-computer interaction, and there will also be display demand. With the development of blockchain technology, shared cars may increase applications, and applications such as e-wallets and supply chain management involving Display + will also be generated.
The third is smart home. Smart homes should go through three stages: first, stand-alone intelligence, second, multi-product linkage, and third, system intelligence. In the smart home scenario, the display is not only a function key, but also meets fashion needs, such as Freeform (shaped, curved) forms. The remote controller launched by Tianma and Google is a pure round Display +, which is a typical representative of Freeform. We must not only improve the display quality, but also the appearance quality, so that the display matches the aesthetic design of the home.
The fourth is the medical field. With the accelerated development of 5G, hospitals are becoming more and more digital, and many high-end displays have been applied to digital film viewing scenarios. For example, the traditional film used for CT examinations has been replaced by display screens in many hospitals, and more display needs will be released in the medical field in the future. In addition, with the innovation of information interaction, mobile medical and telemedicine needs better display solutions, including mobile display, sensor applications, 3D display, etc., to support new applications such as remote surgery.
The fifth is the wisdom factory. With the development of Industry 4.0, many of the equipment directly operated by workers have operated according to programs and intelligence. Therefore, smart factories need more human-computer interaction, which will also generate more display requirements.
Sixth, in the era of the Internet of Everything, we will solve communication problems in remote areas. In the future, IoT devices can be truly real-time online, and that is the real IoT. Tianma hopes to achieve miniaturization of satellite technology through liquid crystal technology.
Seven is a smart city. There will be many sensors in this field, which can be said to be everywhere. Tianma can produce and develop many sensor products based on thin film semiconductor technology.
Peng Xuhui pointed out that Tianma will actively respond to new trends in the display industry. It will develop display solutions including folding and stretching around OLED, continue to lay out liquid crystal silicon, LTPS (low temperature polysilicon technology) products, and promote the development of MicroLED in the automotive field. It will invest another AMOLED six-generation line in Xiamen. It is expected that Launched in the first half of next year.
